Why Is My Baby So Unhappy?

Let’s Talk Colic, Constipation & Crying

If you're reading this with a baby in one arm and your phone in the other, eyes tired, coffee reheated (again)... take a deep breath. You're not alone.

So many parents come to Vive Family Chiropractic asking the same thing:

“Why is my baby so uncomfortable all the time?”
“Why can’t they poop without crying?”
“Is it normal to cry this much?”
“They hate tummy time; are we doing something wrong?”

You’re not. But your baby might be trying to tell you something… and it’s time we listened in a different way.

These Babies Aren’t “Bad” They’re Stuck in Stress Mode

Let’s break it down simply: babies have nervous systems just like we do. That system helps them eat, sleep, poop, move, and grow.

When the nervous system is calm and balanced, babies can:

  • Settle easily

  • Poop regularly

  • Sleep more deeply

  • Enjoy tummy time

  • Hit motor milestones like crawling or rolling

But when the nervous system is stressed, it’s like a baby is stuck in survival mode. Their body says, “I’m not safe” and they might show it by:

  • Crying more (colic)

  • Arching their back during feeds

  • Struggling with poop (constipation)

  • Waking up all night

  • Hating certain positions or being touched

  • Failing to hit those early motor milestones

This isn’t their fault. And it’s definitely not yours. But it is a sign their nervous system needs help.

Where Does This Stress Come From?

Even though babies are small, their stories are big.

Stress can begin:

  • In the womb (tight space, mom’s stress, breech position)

  • During birth (long labor, c-section, forceps, vacuum, fast delivery)

  • After birth (feeding struggles, sleep disruption, lack of movement)

We often see patterns like these in kids whose primitive reflexes haven’t integrated well. These are automatic movements babies are born with (like rooting or sucking), and if they hang on too long, they can create discomfort, movement delays, and yes… even digestion issues.

How Chiropractic Can Help

This is where our approach at Vive comes in.

We don’t guess, we use Insight Scans and neuro checks to measure how your baby’s brain and body are talking to each other.

Once we see the areas of stress, we use very gentle, specific adjustments to calm the nervous system and help your baby shift from survival to safety.

It’s not just about poop. It’s not just about sleep.
It’s about helping your baby’s entire body work better — so they can thrive, not just survive.

You Know Your Baby Best

If your gut says something is off, trust it.
Colic, constipation, reflux, tightness, delays, difficulty latching… they all have a root cause. And you deserve a team who can help you find it.

Whether your baby is just a few days old or already crawling across the floor, we’re here for you.

Hi, I’m Dr. Leah, pediatric, prenatal and family chiropractor, sensory kid turned nervous system expert, and mama to three busy boys I adore. I grew up right here in Jefferson, Iowa… and now I get to raise my own family in the same small town I’ve always loved.
I was a colicky baby myself, the kind who couldn’t be soothed easily and that turned into a sensory-seeking, strong-willed kiddo who really needed her socks just right. So when you walk through my doors feeling overwhelmed because your child will only wears one shirt or always has “talks a lot” written on their report card… I get it.
I’ve been that child. And now I get to be the doctor who helps those kids thrive. After graduating from Iowa State, I earned my Doctorate of Chiropractic from Palmer West in San Jose, California, but Iowa was always home, so back home I came ready to serve the families in the Greene County area.
I’m married to my farmer husband Cody, which means I’ve solo-parented through my fair share of planting and harvest seasons. I’m in the thick of balancing sports schedules, school drop-offs, tech limits, picky eating, and trying to get a decent night's sleep just like the rest of you.
At Vive, I bring all of that, my education, my experience, and my motherhood, into every conversation. You won’t just be heard here, you’ll be understood.

I can’t wait to meet you, hear your story,
and walk this journey with your family.
